While insurance plays a critical role in developing climate resilience and adapting to climate change—challenges that have been exacerbated by recent climate-fueled disasters—there is limited interaction between academic research institutions, the insurance and reinsurance industries, consumer insurance advocates, insurance regulators, and environmental NGOs engaged in this space. This project proposes to explore and establish a Stanford-based center dedicated to advancing sustainable insurance markets. The center aims to provide unique value to insurance industry stakeholders and regulators by offering neutral analysis of insurance-related challenges and scalable solutions, and fostering deeper engagement on insurance policy. Stanford’s goal is to support at least 100 million Americans in adapting to climate-related extremes, with the potential for broader impact through global reinsurance markets.
