Food and Agriculture
The focus of this Flagship Destination is to reduce gigatons per year of greenhouse gas emissions from food and agriculture systems by 2035 while supporting the global goals of ending hunger, supplying healthy diets, and ensuring sustainable food production.
By some estimates, food systems account for 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. This flagship aims to catalyze gigaton-scale GHG reductions across the food system while supporting healthy diets globally and maintaining and improving the health of our ecosystems. Solutions may involve public policy, management of agricultural operations, improved food crops, ocean or freshwater foods, alternative protein sources such as plant-based foods, cell-based meats, and fermentation-derived ingredients, and other ideas. All solutions must prioritize making food affordable and accessible, especially for the most vulnerable.
2022 Projects
In 2022 the Sustainability Accelerator funded its first 31 projects. Several of these multidisciplinary teams advanced sustainability solutions in the area of food and agriculture.
