Excess nitrogen in wastewater can pollute rivers and lakes, yet removing it is often expensive and energy-intensive. Communities also miss a chance to recover that nitrogen as useful fertilizer, especially from highly concentrated waste streams from municipal and animal operations. This project accelerated the development and deployment of a novel electrochemical stripping technology to recover valuable nitrogen fertilizer from wastewaters.

Stanford researchers have developed a prototype system that can harvest fertilizer from urine. The approach could provide sanitation, income, and energy in resource-limited regions.
