Vast reserves of certain magnesium-rich rocks have the potential to permanently remove enormous amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. Often a byproduct of mining, these rocks naturally react with CO2, but the process is far too slow to address climate change in a reasonable timeframe. This project team used a newly discovered thermal reaction to transform the rocks into highly reactive materials that can capture CO2 from the air in just weeks or months, dramatically accelerating the natural process.
